The Wall St. Journal article MDI, a company that helps doctors use digital tools, recently revealed that it is on track to beat IBM and HP to market for next year.
It has set a target of selling its software to healthcare organizations by mid-2016.
In January, MDI’s CEO, John Martin, told a group of reporters at a technology conference in Singapore that his company was on track for sales of $500 million in its software in 2019.
The company’s stock, which had been falling in recent weeks, was up nearly 2% at $3.26 a share at press time.
MDI, which sells software to doctors and hospitals, also has an opportunity to gain market share as its software becomes more popular, said Michael J. Kallman, who co-founded the healthcare software company Zappos and is a professor at Harvard Business School.
“There are a lot of companies who have built their businesses on the back of software, but they’ve done it in a very limited way,” he said.
“The fact that MDI is doing something different and different in software is exciting.”
Kallman said he expects to have a more robust software product than MDI has.
“It’s a very different company,” he told reporters.
Martin said the company will launch its software at a price point that is closer to what he expects for a traditional software product.
He did not say exactly how many customers the company expects to sell its software.
Kallmann said the goal is to have software that will work across devices.
When it comes to the next decade, the big companies will do well, he said, because the software is getting better and better and faster.
MDI has a number of partnerships, including with the University of California, San Francisco, which will help develop its software, Kallmann added.
In January last year, MDIs chief technology officer, Mark H. Pichard, announced that MDIs software would be available to all universities in the United States.
Pichard said the software will be available in early 2019 for both private and public institutions.
But he did not mention whether MDI would be able to sell it at a discount.
At the same time, Pichards own company, MDIS, is working with Microsoft Corp. to develop a cloud-based solution that will enable MDIs business software to be used by Microsoft’s cloud-computing service.
The MDI software has already been available for a limited time for a few universities.
And there is one more thing.
According to Martin, MDs software has a market value of $1.5 billion, up from $950 million in January, which is what it was when he took over in the fall of 2015.
That’s a good start, Martin said.
What’s next for MDIs Software?
Martin told reporters at the conference that he expects the company to release another version of its software sometime this year.
It’s too early to tell how MDI will sell that software, Martin told reporters, because of the launch of the next version of the software.
But, he added, “it’s going to be better than the last one.”
